On the First Day of Black History Month, Black State Democratic Party Chairs Slam GOP Attacks on Black Americans

Today, to mark Black History Month, Democratic Party Chairs Evelyn Brady of Delaware, Charles Wilson of the District of Columbia, Jeanna Repass of Kansas, Colmon Elridge of Kentucky, Randal Gaines of Louisiana, Cheikh Taylor of Mississippi, Daniele Monroe-Moreno of Nevada, LeRoy Jones of New Jersey, Christale Spain of South Carolina, and Carol Burke of the U.S. Virgin Islands released the following joint statement:

“This Black History Month, we honor the remarkable Black trailblazers who never backed down in their pursuit of a more just America. Despite intimidation, oppressive forces, and state-sanctioned violence, our ancestors rose above these tactics of hate and fought for a better future with courage and perseverance. We carry this legacy forward today in the never-ending pursuit of justice.

“Right now, across our nation, we are watching a coordinated attack on Black Americans’ fundamental rights by Donald Trump and extreme Republicans, from rampant racial gerrymandering to Trump’s malicious obsession with gutting the Voting Rights Act. We even saw the Trump Administration attempt to nullify the will of Black voters by raiding the Fulton County, Georgia, election offices to try to overturn an election that Trump lost. 

“In Trump’s America, the American dream is getting further out of reach for Black Americans. Black unemployment is at the highest levels since COVID-19. Black communities are paying the price of Trump’s disastrous economy with skyrocketing bills and grocery prices. And Trump’s Big Ugly Bill is ripping away health care and food assistance from millions of Black families, seniors, veterans, and children. 

“Donald Trump is actively trying to erase the progress that generations of Black Americans have fought and died for, but we will not let him. Democrats stand united in the fight for just and safe communities, lower costs and better jobs, health care and housing for all Americans, and growing opportunity for this and future generations of Black Americans.”
